What Traditionally Happens at a Wedding Reception

A traditional wedding reception has different activities depending on the time of day that it is held. An evening reception will usually be a bit more formal and have the traditional dances such as the First Dance, Bride and Father, Groom and Mother and perhaps a Money Dance or Ethnic Dance. A day time reception may center around a barbeque or picnic and outdoor games.

Most receptions will have some dancing, lots of food and drink, a champagne toast made by the best man and a cake cutting ceremony. Of course, the guests will converse with each other and the bride and groom will make their rounds among the guests and thank them for sharing in their happiness. Hopefully guests from both sides of the new couple's family will mingle and get to know each other.

What Else Can You Do at a Wedding Reception?

Here are some tips for other things that can be part of a wedding reception -

You can add additional fun to your reception by having games or other activities that loosen up your guests, encourage conversation, or even put the bride and groom on the spot. If this is an outdoor or beach wedding you can do the limbo or play volleyball for example.

How about showing slides or videos of the bride and groom's childhood or from their just-returned-from destination wedding or elopement.

If there is time before the wedding date, the wedding party can arrange a scavenger hunt. The bride & her attendants vs the groom and his attendants pair off into teams, each team having someone act as a videographer. Both teams go to a place like a shopping mall with their scavenger hunt lists and a time limit. Ready, set, go - the race begins and hopefully the funny moments are caught on tape. Now show these videos at the reception. Also, the losing team can be made to do something silly at the reception like sing a song, barbershop style.

The following works really well if many of the guests are traveling from far away. Why not make a Wedding Weekend on the weekend of your reception? Hold this at a resort where you have daily activities to help get the families acquainted. Like a family reunion, this is a union of your two families.
