To Toss or Not to Toss - Tossing Rice, Releasing Doves

Wedding Tosses and Releases

Throwing rice and other grains at the newly married couple after the ceremony has historically signified fertility and a life of plenty. Some cultures used nuts, coins or other symbolic items for the same reason. This custom is still carried on in many western cultures and throughout the United States.

Depending on the location of the wedding and the disposition of the bride and groom, modern wedding guests may throw bird seed, rice, confetti, non-littering streamers, flower petals, corn and a variety of other grains. Bubbles are another eco-sensitive choice. Guests, especially children, love blowing bubbles for good luck and bubbles provide a very simple wedding favor. Other Ideas for Tosses and Releases

For an extra spectacle, you may arrange for a release of doves or butterflies. The doves are trained to return to a home location. The butterflies will become a welcome part of someone’s garden.

At some locations, guests may also toss grass seed, rice, bread crumbs or flower petals as these will not harm vegetation. (Hint - Flower Petals also create a beautiful and natural aisle runner). Friendly birds will be happy to eat the rice, grass seed and bread crumbs. If you choose flower petals, your ceremony site would likely appreciate that they are picked up by the end of your event.

You, your caterer or florist should arrange for tosses before the wedding day so that your particular choice is available to guests. Perhaps you’ll have small hand-painted dishes or bags containing bread crumbs or rice on a decorated table near the Ceremony site. Your guests pick up a small amount to throw as the bride and groom make their exit. Then, all are ready to continue with the reception festivities.

Note - Be sure to check with your ceremony location before the wedding day for rules regarding tosses and releases. Even tossing rice may not be allowed at some venues.
